Inflammation Sparking Self-Destructive Depression? (Part 1)

There’s a lot of things that can hold you back from the health you deserve…

And one of those things is depression…

If you’re depressed you’re not going to feel motivated to heal your health and to be the best you can be…

I should know because I personally struggled with it when my health was a ship wreck…

So what could be the cause of depression?

Well there’s a ton of things like stress in your life and of course sickness…

One of main causes of sickness however is chronic inflammation…

The best way to imagine it is like your body is on fire and swollen kind of like when you get bruised if you fall…

And the deadly fires of inflammation is something I’ve talked about before

So what does this mean…?

Your “Defence System” Gone Haywire Is Likely a Major Spark for Depression

The study of how your body’s defence system (i.e. the immune system) is called psychoneuroimmunology

In a 2012 study in the Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology 1 they found that depressed patients have higher levels of things called cytokines and acute phase proteins

These are “signal flares” (biomarkers in geek speak) that your body is being roasted alive by inflammation or your defence system gone nuts…

So How Are Inflammation And Depression Linked?

Your body’s defence system gone nuts every day means chronic inflammation…

Chronic inflammation can lead to problems including icy moods, slug-like thinking, running away from problems, changes to how you see life and everything else and even wrecking your body’s “energy” system… 2

As you learned above, cytokines are the “signal flares” of inflammation – kind of like Viking raiders setting fire to your town…

Other “signals” like CRP (C-reactive protein which is also a signal for heart disease), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and TNF-alpha are also tied to depression… 3 4

Diabetes, depression, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s all share one powerful “magnification” factor – “inflammation”…

They’re the symptoms of a body that’s been sabotaged by a modern diet heavy in cheap, easy processed carbs and junk food…

EXAMPLE: In melancholy depression, bipolar disorder and postpartum depression (i.e. after giving to birth to a baby), your body’s white blood cells called monocytes spit out “genes” that ignite cytokines… which as you guessed it, stokes the bonfires of inflammation… 5

At the same time, cortisol sensitivity goes down, and cortisol is a stress hormone that beats back inflammation…

… when your body can see it…

A drop in “cortisol sensitivity” means your body becomes blind to it…

Plus these inflammatory “signal flares” shoot through your nervous system and sting the vagus nerve that links your gut and your brain 6

So this means not only is your brain and mood affected, it might affect your eating patterns… maybe even give you stomach problems that you can only imagine…

It’s at these times when microglia brain cells flip on…

This means enzymes in your body called IDO (indoleamine 2 3-dioxygenase) rush out and tell another body chemical called tryptophan to stop making “happy” hormones serotonin and melatonin

… Instead it makes “anxiety” and “stress” chemical quinolinic acid7

So are you starting to see how eating a junk food diet, a high blood sugar spiking diet, a high carb diet and/or a highly processed Western style diet could be helping to turn you into a stressed out grouch (or your bosses)?

Now it should be getting really clear that a…

Rabid Immune “Defence” System May Be “Train Wrecking” Your Mood…

So there’s even more new studies that are “dropping the curtain” and revealing how inflammation may be the true reason for depression…

… and not some sort of brain chemical “balance” issue or straight up work stress (though that promotes inflammation) or some other reason…

EXAMPLE: In one BBC article: 8

Researchers found that your reaction to getting the flu often though not always changes your mood… because of inflammation…

You’re “down in the dumps”, don’t want to hang out with anyone much, more sleep and more like a loner…

And those same kind of things happen when you’re depressed…

Inflammation is the your immune system’s way of dealing with danger…

And if it’s constantly high, like it is with chronic inflammation, then you’re going to take damage and suffer…

For some reason 33% or 1 out of 3 depressed people have very high levels of inflammation

And that’s no good or fun for you or your health…
