Is Silence Good for Mental Health?

In our ever-noisy world full of words, music, and vehicle sounds, individuals don’t really get the time to experience silence. Scientific research suggests that’s not good for health. Experts say a few minutes of silence can benefit your health in several ways. An absence of sound may feel like a void, but reducing noise offers benefits for the body, mind, and spirit. Here are the reasons why it plays a key role in one’s health and well-being.  Here’s why you should sit in quietude for some time each day, along with tips on how to do it.

Reasons to Enjoy Silence as A Therapy

  • Lower blood pressure

High blood pressure silently kills health. Interestingly, silence can help lower blood pressure. A few minutes of silence after listening to music can calm your mood. Heart rate and blood pressure drop with silence in those who suffer from extreme states. Silence relaxes the nervous system.

  • Calm the mind

Anxiety doesn’t allow the mind to calm down. Silence may bring stillness to the mind. Learning to be quiet helps save energy within. Silence helps things slow down and lets you stay in the moment, keeping worries away. I am running a few minutes late; my previous meeting is running over.

  • Improve focus and concentration

Silence helps focus. Studies show silence can lower cognitive load and reduce stress. It’s advised to focus on one thing at a time with full concentration. Life happens in a flow. When we focus on one thing, we accumulate our energy in one place.

  • Give the brain the space to grow

The calmer the mind is, the healthier the brain. According to a 2013 animal study, 2 hours of silence helps brain cells grow in the area responsible for emotion and memory. Further research is needed to determine the method’s effectiveness over time.

  • Decrease cortisol level

When we hear powerful music or loud noise at a gathering, all our senses are stimulated, and we feel overwhelmed. People who work amid a noisy crowd or background noise often have high levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Harsh, loud noise causes mental stress and an excessive release of cortisol. When the cortisol level is high, you may gain weight, feel overwhelmed, and have difficulty sleeping.

  • Better sleep health

We need a peaceful, calm environment to sleep. When one is highly stressed, it disrupts their sleep pattern. Silence can effectively help with  insomnia and fatigue. Calm moments and silence can support brain growth and relieve tension. Sleep improves with silence. Practicing silence during the day can help you sleep at night.

  • Brings Creativity

Silence can clear the brain fog. When you put your brain in silent mode, it can spark creativity. There is no direct connection between silence and creativity, but a link between mental distress and creativity has been closely observed for years. Downtime has always been found to support productivity.

  • Boosts Mindfulness

When you are silent, you’re in the moment. Sit with the present. We can’t take silence, so we always choose to fill the void with something, whether it’s taking part in a conversation or listening to music; people can’t take silence. Therefore, it’s necessary to sit with silence and face the inner thoughts consciously. Silence allows thoughts to settle and clear.

  • Relaxes Muscles

Silent moments relax the body from stress. When the body thrives in a calm environment, its muscles relax. The body gets into a parasympathetic state. Daily practice of silence pacifies the mind, helps lower cortisol levels, and reduces stress.

Make the Atmosphere Around You Silent

It’s difficult to escape life’s daily hassles. Add more stillness and silence to your daily life consciously. Some of the ways you can do this include –

  • Start your day early
  • Cut off the background noise
