Protecting Muscle While Losing Weight

A man in his fifties came to us after losing a good amount of weight on his own. The scale looked great, but he didn’t feel great. Climbing stairs was harder, and he felt weak by mid-afternoon, so his question was whether that was just part of the deal.

Not necessarily. When the body sheds pounds, some of the loss can come from muscle as well as fat. Muscle loss during weight loss can leave people feeling weak and may make it harder to keep the weight off over time. A few steady habits can help protect it.

Why care so much about it? Muscle supports strength, balance, and daily movement, and it plays a role in how the body uses energy. It matters more with age, too, since we lose some every year.

Strength training is the big one. Resistance exercise signals the body to hold on to muscle. Weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises a few times a week can help. Start slow and build up over a few weeks.

Protein matters as well. Eating enough supports muscle repair and maintenance, and a provider or dietitian can suggest an amount that fits you.

Pace counts, because very rapid weight loss can raise the chance of losing muscle, and a steady pace, guided by a medical professional when appropriate, is often the better path. Honestly, that was probably part of his story.

Look past the scale, too, since it shows total weight and not what that weight is made of. Body composition scans estimate muscle and fat, so you can see whether you’re losing the right kind of weight. Feeling weak or tired more often can be a sign of muscle loss during weight loss.

And don’t forget sleep, since muscles recover during rest.

If you’re on weight-loss medication or a medical plan, ask your provider how to protect muscle. A monitored plan can adjust nutrition and training as you go.
